Office for Women's Research/Women's Studies receives $250,000 Rockefeller grant

The Rockefeller Foundation awarded a grant of about $250,000 to the Office for Women's Research/Women's Studies Program at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. The grant, titled "Gender and Globalization in Asia and the Pacific," seeks to bring scholars from all over the world to the Manoa campus as residential fellows to study issues like:

o women and economic transformation

o women's health globally

o migration/refugees/diaspora movements and communities

o militarism and global violence

o domestic violence and victimization

o gender, race and representation

o global connections and indigenous peoples

o reparation movements and interracial justice

The program's focus is to initiate work on gender and globalization within an Asia-Pacific context. Teresa Arambula-Greenfield, director of Women's Studies/Office for Women's Research, says the office is particularly interested in proposals that span diverse disciplines and addresses one or more of the above themes. Residential fellowships will be either short-term or longer-term.

"The University of Hawai'i is uniquely positioned to support the cross-disciplinary study of the complex dynamics connecting gender and race to globalization," Arambula-Greenfield says. "Our location at the hub of the Pacific Rim makes this an ideal site for bringing together scholars from around the world to study the complex and changing faces of globalization."

The application deadline for residential fellowships is March 1, 2001. For more information, contact Teresa Arambula-Greenfield or visit www2.hawaii.edu.
