| Pioneer in Indian social history gives Burns Chair Lecture Series |
University of Delhi Professor Sumit Sarkar, who holds the University of Hawai'i at Manoa John A. Burns Distinguished Professor Chair in History for fall 2000, presents a series of lectures titled "Perspectives on Indian Social History Today." His talks will be held 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. Thursdays for the next four weeks at St. John Auditorium Room 11 on the Manoa campus:

Sarkar is a leading social historian of modern Indian. A manuscript he wrote in theTowards Freedom (1937-1947) series published by Oxford University Press was recalled by a government body. Best known for his pioneering works on social history, Sarkar's works include Modern India, A Critique of Colonial India, Khaki Shorts and Saffron Flags: A Critique of the Hindu Right and Writing Social History.
Founded in 1974 and named for the late Hawai'i governor, the John A.
Burns professorship was funded by the Burns Foundation and Hawai'i Legislature
to bring distinguished scholars to Hawai'i to teach, interact with UH faculty
and present public lectures.
