Town Meeting to Address Future of UH West O'ahu A day-long conference next week will explore options for future development of the University of Hawai'iWest O'ahu. The town meeting is scheduled Thursday, September 17, beginning at 9 a.m. at the Leeward Community College Theatre. Participants will hear from state officials and others about the population base from which the campus currently draws its students and about what to expect in the years ahead as surrounding neighborhoods expand. Planners will also discuss the long-range plan for the physical plant development of the campus on the hillside overlooking Kapolei. Keynote speakers for the day include Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano, UH President Kenneth P. Mortimer and James Hall, Chancellor of Antioch University in Ohio, who will offer thoughts on academic planning in a new campus environment. Before assuming his current position with Antioch University, Hall served as the founding president and major driving force behind the establishment of Empire State College in New York, an institution recognized nationally for its innovation in educational delivery. An afternoon panel will explore the expanding capability of technology to aid in teaching and learning experiences of the next century and how the West O'ahu campus might take best advantage of this new environment. Town meeting attendees will be asked to participate in academic program planning. Widespread interest in the future of west O'ahu and the University's
anticipated major presence in the region in the next decade has drawn registrants
from a broad cross-section of private sector and government agencies and
community groups. Additional space is still available, however, and those
wishing further information may call 454-4750 to receive registration materials.
There is no cost for attending the sessions. |
