New Brochure Highlights UH Role in the Community

A new brochure published by the University of Hawai'i gives examples of the myriad of ways the University is an active partner in the community.

"We focus a great deal on the teaching and research roles of the UH system's 10 campuses," comments Jim Manke, interim director for University Relations. "Sometimes we forget to talk about how the University is actively fulfilling the third component of its central mission of instruction, research and community service."

The new brochure, "How UH Makes Hawai'i a Better Place" provides a sampling of services provided by the University. While it is hardly comprehensive, it is indicative, including examples of service:

  • By individuals-such as Professor of American Studies Floyd Matson's lifetime of advocacy for persons with disabilities--as well as by programs--such as Small Business Development Centers' consulting and resource services for beginning entrepreneurs and family businesses.
  • From the big picture-including support for industries old and new-and on the home front-such as advice for home gardeners and training for foster parents.
  • Touching all generations-from school children taught using UH-generated programs and materials to elders intent on keeping their minds active and their bodies healthy.
  • In all aspects of community life-from the arts, to social policy, to economic development, to environmental concerns.

"This publication was developed in part because of the strong response to brochures highlighting outstanding faculty and alumni that were produced as part of the University's 90th anniversary last year," said Manke. Like those earlier brochures, "How UH Makes Hawai'i a Better Place" reflects the way the University's mission is carried out system-wide.

"We decided to release the brochure in conjunction with today's convocation honoring faculty because so many faculty members quietly contribute their time and talents to address community needs," Manke added. "In addition to service that they provide on their own, many members of the faculty at all the campuses incorporate service into classroom assignments or advise the student organizations that make service projects part of their agenda."

Copies of the brochure are available by calling University Relations, 808 956-8856.
