Dedication of The New Marine Research Laboratory at Coconut Island. Ceremonies have been scheduled for Friday afternoon, October 2, beginning at 2:00 p.m. to dedicate the new marine research laboratory at the University of Hawaii's Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology on Coconut Island in Kaneohe Bay. The building is to be named the Edwin W. Pauley Marine Laboratory in memory of the late Edwin Pauley whose family foundation provided gifts of nearly $10 million to UH for the lab and to purchase the privately held portion of the island. An associated library in the lab will be named the Barbara Pauley Pagen and William R. Pagen Library in honor of Mrs. Pauley Pagen and her husband. About 200 people are expected to attend the invitationonly ceremony and tour the new facility. Media coverage is invited and encouraged. To accommodate early deadlines for television newscasts, parking for TVnews vehicles only (four spaces) will be set aside at the Lilipuna Street shoreside pier area for quick access to the shuttle boats that will operate continuously beginning at about 1 p.m. (See attached map for directions to the Lilipuna Street site.) Print media reporters are directed to the parking lot at Windward Community College, from which shuttle vehicles will begin operating at about 1:15 p.m. All media are encouraged to be on the island as early as possible prior to the 2 p.m. ceremony to assure adequate setup time and as a courtesy to other invited guests. Tours of the laboratory building and the other marine research facilities will begin immediately after the ceremony concludes. Shuttles returning to the Kaneohe pier and Windward Community College will continue operating until approximately 6:00 p.m. Media information packets will be delivered in advance to newsrooms no later than Thursday afternoon, October l.
