UH professors, staff members and students received awards at the convocation held at Kennedy Theatre Tuesday.
The following received the Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Teaching, which pays tribute to faculty members whose extraordinary level of subject mastery and scholarship, teaching effectiveness and creativity, and personal values beneficial to students exemplify UH's commitment to quality teaching:
Kenneth Chambers, associate astronomer, Institute for Astronomy, UH Manoa.
Rahul Chattergy, professor of electrical engineering, UH Manoa.
Linda Fujikawa, instructor of Japanese, Kapi'olani CC.
Karen Gebbia Pinetti, associate professor of law, UH Manoa.
Harvey Gochros, professor of social work, UH Manoa.
Gary Helfand, professor of public administration, UH West O'ahu.
Karen Jolly, associate professor of history, UH Manoa.
Sang M. Lee, assistant professor of mathematics, Leeward CC.
Marshall Mock, professor of physical science, Kaua'i CC.
Paul Nash, associate professor of art and ceramics, Windward CC.

The following received the Board of Regents Medal for Excellence in Research, which recognizes faculty members whose scholarly contributions expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of students and the community:
John Learned, professor and chair, Department of Physics and Astronomy, UH Manoa.
Rosemary Gillespie, associate researcher, Pacific Biomedical Research Center and the Department of Zoology, UH Manoa.
Yadong Luo, associate professor of management and industrial relations, UH Manoa.
The Employment Training Center's Outstanding Employee of the Year Award was established by the community colleges to recognize excellence in teaching at the Employment Training Center, which links secondary and postsecondary education through programs for at-risk students. This award was received by:
James Johnson, office administration technology and computer literacy instructor and specialist, Kapi'olani CC.
The following received the Presidential Citation for Meritorious Teaching, which is a Manoa-based award that recognizes faculty members who have made significant contributions to teaching and student learning:

Péter Jacsó, associate professor of library and information science, UH Manoa.
Cathy Manu Ka'iama, instructor of accounting, UH Manoa.
Karol Richardson, instructor of nursing, UH Manoa.
The following received the Frances Davis Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching, which honors UH faculty members for dedication to teaching and demonstration of excellence as teachers of undergraduate students:

Norma Fujise, instructor of nursing, UH Manoa.
Susan Pelowski, assistant professor of psychology, UH West O'ahu.
Marcia Somer, assistant professor of family resources, Kapi'olani CC.
Regina Titunik, assistant professor of political science, UH Hilo.
Michael Tom, assistant professor of mathematics, Windward CC.
The Robert W. Clopton Award for Distinguished Community Service recognizes a Manoa faculty member who has accepted a socially significant role as an intellectual leader and exemplar beyond the campus and who has applied academic expertise to the improvement of the community. This award was received by:
Kem Lowry, professor of urban and regional planning, UH Manoa.
The following received the Hung Wo and Elizabeth Lau Ching Foundation Award for Faculty Service to the Community, which is presented to a male and female faculty member from UH campuses other than Manoa in recognition of significant contributions to strengthening the ties between UH and the community:
Antoinette Martin, assistant professor of art and coordinator of Gallery 'Iolani, Windward CC,
Daniel Boylan, professor of history, UH West O'ahu.
The Willard Wilson Award for Distinguished Service to the University, recognizes extraordinary service and commitment to the University of Hawai'i. This award was received by:
Michael Tamaru, publications manager of the Office of University Relations, UH Manoa.
The Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding Contributions to Vocational Education, recognizes faculty and students within the UH Community Colleges for outstanding achievements and contributions to vocational-technical education. This award was received by:
Randal Nunokawa, a student majoring in culinary arts, Kapi'olani CC.
The following received the University of Hawai'i at Manoa 'Ohana Award for Outstanding Service to Students, which recognizes leadership in fostering a campus community that supports the intellectual growth, personal development, and civic responsibility of students, and contributions to the professional attitude and morale of student service units at the Manoa campus:
