UH Press's Chrysanthemum Throne
Records indicate that a continuous Japanese imperial dynasty can be traced for more than 1,600 years, making it world's oldest hereditary monarchy. All that is documented in a recent book from UH Press. In this first general study of the Japanese imperial institution throughout its history, author and historian Peter Martin brings together material, most of it available only in Japanese and inaccessible to the non specialist. In the book, he surveys the historical, political and religious status of the monarchy of Japan from its mythological origins to our own times. The Chrysanthemum Throne sheds new light on the role played by the throne since the Meiji restoration in 1868 and Japan's subsequent emergence as one off the leading economic powers in the world today. This has been the University Report, join bright and early tomorrow morning for the UH Today segment on NBC Hawaii News8, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
