UH Press releases Presstime in Paradise
Since it first rolled off the presses in 1856, the Honolulu Advertiser has been an important force in reporting and shaping the news of Honolulu and the Hawaiian Islands. In time, it was the most successful commercial English-language newspaper in the Islands. Now owned by the Gannett Company, the Advertiser is one of the oldest newspapers still in operation west of the Rockies. George Chaplin, author of Presstime in Paradise, was editor-in-chief from 1959 to 1986. He writes a colorful and entertaining insider's account of nearly a century and a half of the newspaper's history. There are stories on issues and historical events that have made a powerful impact on the islands along with comments on the Advertiser's position regarding each. These include the dilemma of Hawaii's Americans of Japanese ancestry during World War II, the labor movement, statehood and others. Presstime in Paradise is available in bookstores. This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
