Achieving Wellness the SMART Way

The year's half over, how are you doing on that New Year's resolution to get in shape?

Not great? The good news is that it's never too late to make a fresh wellness resolution. The bad news is that moving from intention to action is often difficult.

Betty Carlson of the UH Manoa Wellness Council suggests achieving your goals the SMART way. That's S.M.A.R.T., an acronym that reminds you to make your goals Specific, Measurable, Action oriented, Result oriented and Time oriented.

For example, vowing "to lose weight" is NOT a SMART approach. Instead make the goal Specific and Measurable by saying "I will lose 10 pounds." Then make it Action and Result oriented by saying "I'll lose 10 pounds by walking three days a week for 30 minutes." Finally make the goal time oriented, "I'll lose 10 pounds by walking three days a week for thirty minutes from July 15 to September 30."

This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan.
