Staying Well While Traveling Abroad
If you're planning a trip abroad soon, be sure to plan for your health as well as for your enjoyment. Lily Ning, director of the University of Hawaii Student Health Services recommends having a doctor look over your travel itinerary to determine what illness-prevention measures you should take. This is especially important for travelers with chronic conditions and special health needs. Find out whether there are any endemic illnesses-such as malaria or hepatitis- at your destination. Vaccines can prevent many diseases. Common sense offers important protection. Get sufficient rest and fluids, use sun screens and insect repellents, avoid local food and water. Be sure to bring enough medication to last the entire trip, don't rely on unfamiliar tonics and cures. And, of course, stay away from unsafe sexual activities and anything that involves blood, finally, Ning says forget that tattoo in Tahiti. This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
