UH Has Record Research Year
199798 was a record year for extramural research dollars-the contracts and grants money received from non-University sources. UH received $91.2 million for the year ending June 30, a 2.4 percent increase over the previous year's record high of $89.1. "The numbers are a reflection of the talent and dedication of our faculty members," says senior Vice President for Research Alan Teramura. More than two-thirds of the research dollars come from federal sources. About 13 percent come from Mainland businesses and organizations, including other U.S. universities, and 7 percent come from international sources. The overall extramural funding total of $159.6 million, which includes training grants and other non-research contracts, fell slightly from last year's record $160.9 million. Teramura says the drop is not surprising since more than half of the non-research funds come from Hawai'i agencies and business and health organizations, which are struggling with the economy.
