National Foreign Language Resource Center is a Local Treasure
The University of Hawaii's National Foreign Language Resource Center is one of seven centers nationwide that would enhance the nation's capacity to teach and learn foreign language effectively. Among UH's unique strengths is that there are more than 30 languages taught, including many that are not commonly offered in the United States. The center focuses on projects that cross language boundaries and improve the teaching of all languages, while taking advantage of UH's particular strength-Asia and Pacific languages. It conducts research on new and improved methods for teaching foreign languages, including teacher training; use of advanced educational technology; and development of materials for less commonly taught languages. In addition to receiving $3.5 million in federal funds, the center has helped attract more than $1,000,000 in other grants to the college. Beyond the economic benefits to Hawaii, the center serves the community in many ways. This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
