Scoring big on and off the court pt. 2
For Wahine Head Coach Vince Goo, getting an education is a top priority that starts with recruiting quality students. Of course Goo and his coaching staff look for athletes who can nail the three-point bomb and administer suffocating defense. But he says they now give considerably more weight to test scores and grades. Goo credits Serenda Valdez for keeping a watchful eye on the team's academic progress. Departmental tutors and a supportive faculty have been particularly instrumental in player progress. And with a room full of scholars, some Wahine need look no further than their teammates for assistance during the weekly study hall session. A few team rules don't hurt either. An unexcused class tardy means a two-mile run on the track at six the next morning; an unexcused absence means a one-week suspension from the team. The rules, Goo insists, aren't are intended to strike fear in his players, but rather to teach them a valuable point. This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
