Food Pyramid Local Style pt.2

Choosing foods according to the USDA food guide pyramid is a healthy way to eat. But do local foods fit the pyramid approach? Yes, says Trish Britten, a nutrition specialist at the University of Hawaii.

Yesterday, I told you about the starches and the vegetable and fruit layers. The next layer of the pyramid includes protein and calcium. Some of these are high in fat like like chicken katsu and spareribs, two local favorites. Britten says make leaner choices like steamed fish and tofu. You can eat high fat foods like Portuguese sausage only once in a while.

Use the top layer of the pyramid-the fats, oils and sugars-sparingly. Consider using local low fat seasonings like ginger, garlic, green onions, basil or mint.

This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan.
