Taro Book Mauka to Makai pt. 2

Call it kalo, tayoba, gabi, or malanga. Any way you slice, it still comes up taro.

In Hawaii, taro is a vital part of the nutritional, spiritual and agricultural traditions of the Hawaiian people. When Hawaii's population consisted exclusively of Hawaiians, taro was the main staple.

Now a University of Hawaii researcher and 45 of his colleagues have pulled together all kinds of information about everything you want to know about taro in a book called Taro Mauka to Makai.

Jim Hollyer and his colleagues guide you through various aspects of taro. From its rich cultural history, to the different kinds of taro to how to grow the labor-intensive vegetable. Hollyer's guide takes you on a historical tour and even shows you how to grow taro hydroponically.

Taro Mauka to Makai is can be purchased at Borders Books and Music or by calling 956-7036.

This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan.
