UH receives grant for service-learning project

The University of Hawaii is one of only 14 universities and colleges nationwide to receive a three-year grant from the Campus Compact National Center for Community Colleges for a project to advance service-learning . The University of Hawaii at Manoa and Kapiolani Community College will receive $41,000 in funding for the "2+ 4 = Service on Common Ground" project.

The project combines the efforts of two-year and four-year college and university faculty to improve student performance through service-learning. Service-learning provides education through experience by encouraging students to perform meaningful service in the community related to their course work. Through such service as elderly care and after-school tutoring, students bridge cultural and generation gaps.

The project is being led by Dick Dubanoski of UHM , and Bob Franco, Tanya Renner, and John Morton of KCC.
