Sea Grant Program has bodysurfing tips Body surfing is a sport enjoyed by many in the islands. Since it doesn't require any equipment, it's the least expensive of all the wave-riding sports, although almost all bodysurfers wear fins for added propulsion. The University of Hawaii's Sea Grant Program, in cooperation with the State's Division of Boating and Ocean Recreation, put together a boating and water safety package for various water sports. Here are some safety tips regarding bodysurfing: Learn how to swim. Always bodysurf with a friend. If you're unfamiliar with a beach, ask questions before you go in the water. Take time to observe wave and current conditions before going in. Know your limits, stay out of surf that is too dangerous for you to handle. Finally, drugs and alcohol have no place on the beach or in the ocean. For more information about the water safety package call 956-7410. This is the University Report, I'm Tracy Orillo Donovan. |
