University of Hawai‘i
2002 Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching

Jon Goss, a professor in the Department of Geography in UH Manoa’s College of Social Sciences, believes that good teaching often begins with good scholarship. He is passionate about education as a means to enhance social awareness and participation in civil society. He presents a variety of explanations of society to show the contested nature of social knowledge and to enable students to reach their own understanding of social life and develop the skills to express their points of view.

Students respond to his extraordinary efforts and capabilities. One wrote, "Dr. Goss spent a great deal of time preparing for class. This realization compelled me to give my best effort for each assignment."

Goss incorporates a variety of techniques to enhance classroom instruction. Fieldwork, peer evaluations, group discussions and reading guides stimulate students to learn. He uses Internet-based instruction and discussion in many courses and helped implement an international collaboration on interactive distance education. Colleagues regard him as exemplary in his dedication, enthusiasm and respect for teaching and students.

Goss’s has taught eight undergraduate courses and seven graduate courses. He received positive review as resident director for the London Study Abroad Program, offering a challenging course on British film that reflected his enthusiasm about film as well as geography.
