2002 Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching

 

Aaron Tanaka is an associate professor in the Computer Electronics and Networking Technology (CENT) program at Honolulu Community College. He is considered an exceptional teacher. A colleague stated, "Students can trust that they are getting the very best education in terms of up-to-date knowledge and Tanaka’s commitment to help them learn." Tanaka establishes a working relationship with students based on trust. He promises students the very best education and up-to-date knowledge. Inspired by his trust and confidence, they succeed in their classes and grow both professionally and personally.

Tanaka is committed to the high technology mission of Honolulu CC. Under his leadership, the electronics program, which enrolled about 150 students, was transformed into the innovative CENT program. Enrollment, now at 539, continues to grow. To stay abreast of the latest innovations and develop appropriate courses, Tanaka has become certified as a Microsoft System Engineer, a Cisco Network Associate, a Novell Administrator and more. He is developing CENT course content to be offered over the Internet to China, and he is playing a major role in developing the integrated applied curriculum of advanced technology and core liberal arts courses for Honolulu CC’s first baccalaureate degree.
