University of Hawai‘i
2002 Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Teaching

Gailynn Williamson is assistant professor of philosophy at Leeward Community College. In addition to introductory philosophy, morals and society, and logic, Williamson has taught history of philosophy, ethics in healthcare and a joint UH West O‘ahu/Leeward CC learning-community course entitled "The Fundamental Values of the Good Community." She is regarded as an outstanding teacher who is passionate about teaching and her students.

Williamson considers the diversity of students who attend community colleges to be an asset. In her words, the diverse student body “creates a smorgasbord of ideas, points of view and experiences.” She challenges students to think critically, take risks and not to accept ideas without sufficient analysis. One student admiringly described her as “Plato, Socrates and Aristotle all rolled up in one little body.”

Williamson has served on many campus committees and community organizations. She has been the philosophy discipline coordinator, lead advisor to the campus chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa and member of the faculty senate. She participated in two campus committees relating to accreditation, chaired the UH system-wide articulation standing committee on arts and humanities and served on the State of Hawai‘i Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities. She is also a founding member, president and director of Animal Rights–Hawai‘i.
