2003 The President’s Award for Excellence in Building and Grounds Maintenance

 Since the mid 1980s, this president’s award has honored employees in the UH system who exhibit dedication and sustained superior performance in a maintenance, landscaping, custodial, shop or trucking position.

 

Fred Dela Cruz is a building maintenance worker at UH Hilo. He performs repairs in all areas of building and vehicle maintenance. Dela Cruz is also the UH Hilo and Hawai‘i CC campus lock and key specialist. Although not part of his job, he took home study courses and participates in yearly training sessions to become proficient in different locking systems. He was instrumental in planning and implementing the re-keying of several building to improve security.

Dela Cruz frequently goes above and beyond the call of duty—he works through breaks and meals to complete urgent lock repairs and helps other workers diagnose problems and teaches them how to performs repairs.

Dela Cruz exhibits the ideal combination of dedication, intelligence and interpersonal skills. Even when receiving multiple pages of urgent repairs, Dela Cruz always greets everyone with a smile.
