University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges
2003 Chancellor’s Award for Outstanding Service

This award acknowledges a civil service and/or administrative, professional or technical staff member for outstanding service to the university. The award was established in 1984 by a donor who wishes to remain anonymous.

Christine Neves is secretary to the director of administrative services at Kapi‘olani Community College, but her responsibilities surpass that of the average secretary. In fact, while Neves carries an enormous workload, she is the first to volunteer to help others who are in need of assistance.

Neves has college-wide responsibilities as the campus room scheduler. She resolves conflicting scheduled events, suggests alternative room plans and handles reservations for outside groups as well as administrators, faculty and staff. Neves also provides the monthly campus travel reports, does all the purchasing for human resources and the director's office, is the unofficial desktop computer support person and is the campus liaison to the chancellor's office for conference and facility set-ups.

Neves does all this in addition to her primary responsibility of supporting her boss with secretarial assistance, keeping the director apprised of assignments and deadlines and providing frontline troubleshooting.

The numerous letters of commendation and thanks that Neves regularly receives epitomizes the quality of customer service that she provides to both campus and off-campus users.
