Keiki Learn Local Numerology Through Local Zoology

book cover   Two Hawai‘i expatriates collaborated to create a Hawaiian-style Old MacDonald book full of aloha. Two years in the making, Auntie Lulu’s Zoo is the second children’s book collaboration between island-born publisher, writer and educator Kevin Sullivan and UH alumna and illustrator Deb Aoki.
Auntie Lulu’s Zoo is a fun-filled book that teaches kids to count from 1 to 10 in Hawaiian and introduces them to local wildlife all to the tune of “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” From 1 kohola (humpback whale) splish-splashing on an outrigger canoe to 10 pupukanioe (snails) surfing at Pipeline, Auntie Lulu’s Zoo features island animals large and small, familiar and unusual, native and introduced species, all having fun in Hawai‘i. Mano (sharks) sing in a Waikiki nightclub, walapi (wallabies) bungee jump off Aloha Tower and nene (geese) bike down the slopes of Haleakala. Anything goes in Auntie Lulu’s Zoo,

While both Sullivan and Aoki grew up and met in Hawai‘i, Auntie Lulu’s Zoo was a collaboration borne across many miles. During the creation of the book, Sullivan was teaching in Japan and then moved to Los Gatos, California, where he now lives. Meanwhile, Aoki was living in Seattle and later moved to Los Angeles. The exchange of ideas, drafts and sketches all happened via e-mail.

Auntie Lulu’s Zoo is available from most local booksellers and at Amazon.com.
