Develops Partnership with
Biomedical Research Facility
UH Manoa has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Windber Research
Institute to develop a strategic business relationship and research alliance
in the growing fields of genomics (the determination of genome sequences and
their interpretation), proteomics (the determination of the structure and function
of proteins) and bioinformatics (information technology applied to biology).
WRI is a world-class, state-of-the-art biomedical research facility created
in September 2000 as a partner with Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington,
DC.
"The memorandum is an important first step in creating a synergy between
Windber’s expertise in proteomics and UH Manoa bioinformatics computing
capability through the Maui High Performance Computing Center and our on-campus
research expertise,” says Manoa Chancellor Peter

ACM
Receives $100,000 for Master Class Series
The Academy for Creative Media received a $100,000 gift from the
family foundation of UH alumni and local businessman Jay Shidler.
The gift will fund the ACM
Master Class series, a program that will bring in a variety of local, national
and international distinguished speakers from the entertainment industry. The
series is a continuation of the academy’s successful visit by X-Men director
Bryan Singer last May which drew over 1,200 to the UH Manoa campus. Read

UH Hilo
Offers Transitional Summer Courses
UH Hilo’s Keaholoa STEM program (science, technology, engineering and
mathematics) and Title III program (HCOP – Health Careers and Opportunities
Program), offer two new transitional courses this summer for incoming and currently
enrolled UHH and Hawai‘i CC students. Both courses are designed for students
who are preparing for careers in science, mathematics, computer science, engineering,
medicine and related health fields. The courses offered are foundations in
mathematics and chemistry and observing the world through the physics-math

Adobo
Cook-off
The UH Manoa School of Law held its 1st Annual Adobo Cook-off on March 16.
Judges Carol Mon Lee, law school associate dean; Eric Yamamoto, law professor;
Summer Kupau, law student and Violet Daguyo, law school custodian are hard
at work sampling the chicken and pork entries.
