HNEI
Assembles First Flash Carbonization Unit
Michael
J. Antal and the flash carbonization unit.
UH Manoa’s Hawai‘i Natural Energy Institute held an open house to
celebrate the assembly of the world’s first commercial-scale flash carbonization
unit on Tues., July 20. Flash carbonization is an innovative technology for the
production of charcoal from various biomass sources such as wood, agricultural
byproducts and green wastes.
“After the flash carbonization unit becomes fully operational, it will
be capable of handling all of the university’s green wastes and turning
them into charcoal, a salable product,” says Michael
J. Antal, Jr., Coral Industries Professor of Renewable Energy
Resources. “Not only will these waste materials no longer require the expense
of being hauled to a dump site, but a valuable commodity will be produced.”

UH Works with Policymakers to Improve Access to Higher Eduction
Hawai‘i was one of
five states selected to participate in the Western Interstate Commission for
Higher Education’s Changing Direction: Integrating Higher Education Financial
Aid and Financing Policy project. The goal is to improve state-level policymaking
strategies on tuition, financial aid and state appropriations.
“This project provides a unique opportunity for policymakers in Hawai‘i
to think about the relationship between what the state provides to higher education,
what UH charges students and what financial help is available to students,” said Linda

BOR Statement Regarding Dobelle
Patricia Lee, chair
of the Board of Regents, issued the following press statement on
Thurs., July 22. “The Board
of Regents appreciates all the support it has received from the
university community
and the public while it has proceeded in earnest during the mediation
with regard to former President Evan Dobelle.
Beyond the attention to mediation, many important university matters
have been addressed,
and the board applauds the manner in which the Acting President David
McClain and the other university leaders have worked so professionally
with the board to make significant progress despite the continued
spotlight on the mediation.
From the report we received this morning, we believe one more week
of mediation is warranted and could prove fruitful. The board will
reconvene on July 29 at 2 p.m. In adherence to the mediation agreement,
there will be no further comment on this matter until the next
board meeting.”
