Regents'
Medal for Research Honorees
The Board of Regents selected three UH researchers as the recipients of the 2004
Regents’ Medal for Excellence in Research. The award recognizes their scholarly
contributions that expand the boundaries of knowledge and enrich the lives of
students and the community.
The honorees are
• Alexander
Krot, a researcher at the Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics
and Planetology, for his work on the petrology of meteorites
• Mark
Martindale, an associate professor at the Pacific Biomedical
Research Center, for his research on evolutionary developmental biology
• John
Tonry, an astronomer at the Institute for Astronomy, for
his work on distant supernovae

Ito-Won Recognized
for Contributions to Vocational Education
Marilynn Ito-Won, an associate professor and counsellor at Honolulu
CC, was awarded the Masaki and Momoe Kunimoto Memorial Award for Outstanding
Contribution to Vocational Education. She possesses an incredible understanding
of the latest developments and technical changes in each program area. These
changes impact present and future workforce demands and job placement. Ito-Won
also puts her students first, acting as an extra “mom” who is concerned
about each and every one of them. One instructor says, “She has been the
sole savior of lots of my students on the verge of dropping out.” Read

Ito-Won will be recognized along with other UH award winners at a system-wide Convocation
Ceremony on Sept. 14.

Go Supercomputer
Danielle
Izaak from the University of The Virgin Islands participated in From
Desktop to Supercomputer.
Sixteen students participated in the High
Performance Computing Modernization Office’s summer institute, From
Desktop to Supercomputer, July 26–August 6. The institute provided minority
students with intensive instruction in high performance computing.
Sandra
Swanson, Maui CC, and Robert Moorhead, Mississippi State
University conducted the class. Students built a mini-cluster with four desktop
computers, learned to parallelize serial code, parallelized and ran code on Maui’s
32-processor supercomputer and visualized large data sets with state-of the-art
software. Classes were held at UH Manoa, Maui CC and the Maui High Performance
Computing Center. Their final presentations was broadcast over the UH Access
Grid. The institute was sponsored by the Department of Defense High Performance
Modernization Office.
North
Hawai‘i Center Blessed
Rockne
Freitas, Hawai‘i CC chancellor, Rose Tseng, UH Hilo chancellor
and David McClain, UH acting president attened the North Hawai‘i
Education and Research Center blessing.
UH Hilo held a blessing to celebrate the renovation and construction of the North
Hawai‘i Education and Research Center, formerly the old Honoka‘a
Hospital, on Aug. 12. The $1.75 million renovation plan includes construction
of classrooms, computer labs for Web-based education, a multi-purpose room and
offices.
“UH Hilo is excited to become a part of the North Hawai‘i community
as it writes a new chapter in its proud and storied history,” said UH Hilo
Chancellor Rose Tseng. “We
believe there is tremendous potential here, and look forward to working with
the community to help build a bright future.”
