The Science Working Group of the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope has recommended that Haleakala be the site to house the world’s largest optical solar telescope. If approved, the site will be developed in conjunction with UH’s Institute for Astronomy, which now operates the Mees Solar Observatory on Haleakala. ATST will make its final decision in December.

“We are extremely excited that the Science Working Group has recognized the enormous scientific potential of Haleakala,” said Rolf-Peter Kudritzki, director of the Institute for Astronomy. “Having the ATST come to Haleakala would be the next natural step in the evolution of solar research, to follow recent IfA advances in coronal observation and development of new infrared instrumentation for solar physics on Haleakala.”

$1.1 Million Awarded to Build English Language Capacity in Vietnam

Recognizing the university’s long history with higher education in Vietnam and the quality of its second language studies department, Atlantic Philanthropies has awarded UH a $1.1 million grant. The grant will support expanded English language teaching and applied linguistics capacity at the Hanoi University of Foreign Studies and other institutions in Vietnam.

At the heart of the program will be the university’s work to improve the quality of post-graduate education and teacher training in English for foreign-language professionals in Vietnam. A second key component will be the establishment of a UH Inter-University Center in Hanoi. The center will serve as a hub for UH activity in Southeast Asia and support training, research and partnerships throughout the region in a number of areas potentially including nursing, public health, business, American studies and tourism.
