ACM Filmmaker Wins

Student filmmaker Kaliko Palmiera received
the Blockbuster Video Audience Award at the 2004 Louis Vuitton/Hawaii
International Film Festival for his short documentary on his musician
dad, Steve Ma‘i‘i. Palmiera is a Manoa student in the Academy
for Creative Media.
Filmmaker Jennifer Akana-Sturla recognized ACM instructor Anne
Misawa for her work as director of photography on Akana-Sturla's
short Kamea, which won a Blockbuster audience favorite award.
Several HIFF officials saluted ACM for laying the foundation for a
new generation of Hawai‘i filmmakers.

Community Groups Honor Tseng and Cadman in December Events

Hilo Chancellor Rose Tseng is one of four
Hawai‘i educators who will receive the 2004 Woman of Distinction
honor from the Girl Scout Council of Hawai‘i on Dec. 1. Tseng will
be honored along with Department of Education Superintendent Patricia
Hamamoto, Chaminade University President Sue Wesselkamper and La Pietra
Hawai‘i School for Girls Head Nancy White. Tickets for the dinner
and silent auction at Hilton Hawaiian Village are $150. For information,

Dean Edwin Cadman and the John A. Burns School
of Medicine will be honored at the American Lung Association's Christmas
Seals Gala on Dec. 9. They will receive the 2004 Mauli Ola Award for
efforts to improve lung health in Hawai‘i through research, education
and advocacy. Tickets for the banquet and silent auction at the Hilton

Heck Named to Endowed Chair
Manoa's Ronald Heck has been appointed to
the Dai Ho Chun Endowed Chair in the College o Education. Heck is professor
and chair of educational administration. He has written extensively on
educational policy, performance assessment and research methods.
As Dai Ho Chun chair holder, Heck will extend his research into leadership,
school effects and student course-taking patterns. The chair was established
by a gift from the estate of Dai Ho Chun, a
public school teacher, UH faculty member and director of the forerunner
to the East-West Center.
