
Frederick and Joan Harris with the premier Chinese Collaboration Celebrated
Professors of Physics Frederick Harris and Stephen
Olsen met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao during an Oct. 15 celebration
marking 25 years of research collaboration. The Manoa scientists were
among 10 U.S. representatives attending the Joint Committee for Cooperation
on High Energy Physics in Beijing's government headquarters and a gala
dinner in the Great Hall of China.
Harris, a UH faculty member since 1970, has conducted research at the
Beijing Electron Spectrometer detector since it began operation in 1993.
Olsen, who came to UH in 1992, primarily works through similar collaboration
with Japan. They and fellow UH physicists are expanding the understanding
of how particle physics works.
Hashimoto Gets His Day
Clark Hashimoto, former College of Tropical
Agriculture and Human Resources county administrator, was honored by
Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa who named Nov. 10 Clark Hashimoto Day in honor
of his 28 years of service to Maui agriculture. Hashimoto retired to
his family's persimmon farm on the island.

Retired banker and Manoa alumnus Howard Karr has
been elected chair of the UH Foundation Board of Trustees. Also elected
were developer Bert A. Kobayasi and Hawai‘i Dental Services President Faye
Kurren, vice chairs; Bank of Hawai‘i CEO Allan
Landon, treasurer, and Bojim Investments Chair James
Wo, secretary. Kobayashi attended Kapi‘olani CC and Kurren

Agent Jari Sugano will contribute a monthly
column to the Honolulu Advertiser. Her column on fruits and
vegetables will appear every fourth week in Friday's Island Life section.
Carol Mon Lee spoke on American legal education
at Capital Normal University and the International Law School at China
University of Political Science and Law in Beijing.
Hilo Assistant Professor Harald Barkhoff served
as sport psychologist and scientific consultant to the German National
Team during the World Artistic Roller Skating Championships in Fresno,
Calif., this month.
Marika Ripke, project coordinator for the
Manoa Center on the Family's Hawai‘i Kids Count initiative, has
been appointed to the sate Commission on Fatherhood. The legislature
established the commission in 2003.
Danielle Conway Jones participated in panels
on government contract and trademark law at the National People of Color
Conference at George Washington University Law School. |
