Jazz Legend Performs

Louis Hayes and the Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band performs at Hilo Theatre Jan. 15, Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium Jan. 21, Windward CC’s Paliku Theatre Jan. 22, and at Kaua‘i Performing Arts Center Jan. 23. For more than 40 years, drummer Louis Hayes has been a catalyst for energetic, unrelenting swing in his self-led bands, as well as in those whose respective leaders reads like an encyclopedia of straight ahead post-bop modern jazz.

The last surviving member of Cannonball Adderley’s hard bop juggernaut, Detroit-born Hayes put together this stylish quintet to celebrate the high-spirited grooves and soulful charisma of his former boss. At 67, Hayes’ crisply swinging ride cymbal, downhill momentum and hipster’s wit remain as sharp as ever, and vibrant alto saxophonist Vincent Herring gleefully steps into Adderley’s shoes.
