Visiting Artist to Speak, Perform

Rosanna Raymond |
|
Poet, artist and costume designer Rosanna Raymond is
the Center for Pacific Islands Studies Visiting Distinguished Artist
for 2005 at Manoa.
Born in New Zealand of Samoan and pakeha (haole) ancestry, Raymond was
raised in a predominantly Maori community. She draws on all three heritages
for her art and multi-media performances. Taking inspiration from the
oral histories she listened to growing up, Raymond "wrestles with
the landscapes of her differing worlds."
Now living in England, she also struggles with the challenges of trying
to draw on her "Island ness" at a distance.
Raymond will be in residence at Manoa Feb. 7-11, visiting classes and
making two public presentations-
- Beaten, Twisted, Flowing: Creating in the Diaspora, a symposium at
noon Feb. 8, Center for Korean Studies Auditorium.
- Warm Breezes and Soft Touches, a performance at 7 p.m. Feb. 10 in
HIG 110. Raymond combines poetry, artwork and costume design to create
memorable characters such as Full Tusk Maiden, who enlighten as they
entertain. Refreshments will follow.

In Memory: Hampton Carson

Carson, 1970s photo |
Memorial services for Manoa Emeritus Professor Hampton L. Carson
are scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 12, at the garden level,
Jefferson
Hall, East-West Center. He, a member of the faculty as an entomologist
and researcher in cellular and molecular biology, died last month.
Carson had been associated with UH since 1963, and was world renowned
for his studies relating to fruit fly populations to examine (in his
words) “genetic changes in populations that lead to the origin of species,
species formation on oceanic islands as paradigm, chromosomes and evolution,
evolution of parthenogenesis and sexual behavior and genetic shifts in
small populations.”
Carson was one of a few Manoa faculty members elected to membership
(in 1978) in the National Academies of Sciences. |
