Can
Noni Help Cancer Patients?
 |
Brian F. Issell |
Brian F. Issell gives the talk Noni—Does
it Help Cancer Patients? on Wed., Aug. 3, 7 p.m. at Manoa’s
Hawai‘i Institute of Geophysics 110. Is noni,
available over the counter in many forms, the new wonder drug? Issell's
medical research has been focused on finding better ways to treat
cancer patients.
Issell decided to study noni, an odiferous tropical fruit, after a
number of his patients claimed they felt better after taking noni. In
2001, he received a grant from the National Institutes of Health to measure
the effectiveness of freeze-dried noni in alleviating the effects of
cancer. While Issell has not concluded his study, he shares some of his
findings to date.
A professor of medicine at the University of Hawai‘i, Issell
is director of the Clinical Trials Unit at the Cancer Research Center
of Hawai‘i and a practicing internist and medical oncologist.
