Gender Roles and Witch Hunts Manoa’s Earle Ernst Theatre presents Vinegar Tom, Sept. 7–17. Vinegar Tom is a challenging and provocative work by triple Obie Award-winning playwright Caryl Churchill. The play examines the history of women's rigidly defined roles in society and holds a mirror up to today. In light of the witch trials where social transgressors were branded as witches, Vinegar Tom poses the question "Would they have hanged you then?" The production illuminates the restricted roles of women in two eras by juxtaposing scenes of a 1650s witch hunt with 1950s music reflecting such styles as doo-wop and Motown. Due to coarse language, violence and subject matter, this play is recommended for mature audiences only. (808) 956-7655
