on National Ethics Project Team
Manoa Associate Professor of Human Nutrition Dian
Dooley and Department of Philosophy Specialist Thomas
Jackson are helping establish a comprehensive, interdisciplinary,
inter-institutional program to teach research ethics to graduate
students.
They are among the institutional coordinators/senior ethics fellows
participating in a three-year Land Grant Universities in Research Ethics
grant funded by the National Science Foundation and led by Gary Comstock
of North Carolina State University. Also participating are Iowa State
University, Purdue University, University of Wisconsin and other North
Carolina institutions.
UH's Berg Named General
Husband Steve Berg and Gov. Linda Lingle affix the new
general's stars
UH alumna and staff member Kathleen F. Berg was
promoted to brigadier general Aug. 29, becoming the Hawai‘i Air
National Guard’s first female one-star general just three years
after she was the first woman promoted to colonel in the Hawai‘i
Army and Air National Guard.
As the assistant adjutant general for air and acting chief of staff
for Headquarters Air National Guard, Berg will supervise the headquarters
staff and assume the duties of the commander during his absence. She guides
subordinate units with 250 officers and 2,210 enlisted personnel and
an operating budget of $85 million. She joined the guard in 1977 and
commanded the 293rd Combat Communications Squadron at Hickam Air Force
Base for seven years.
At Manoa, Berg works full time as associate director of the Curriculum
Research and Development Group, where she has also served as a curriculum
writer, researcher, evaluator and teacher. She holds a BEd with distinction
in mathematics education, MEd in secondary education and PhD in educational
psychology, all from Manoa’s College of Education.
Four from Maui Are Centennial Honorees
Maui Chancellor Clyde Sakamoto and three
members of his faculty are among the 100 Valley Isle residents recognized
as Centennial Honorees on the occasion of the county's 100th anniversary.
Sakamoto was recognized for 32 years of service at the college and "facilitating
its evolution into a four-year degree school." Also honored --
Nancy Johnson, director of nursing, dental
and allied health programs, for 22 years of service to the college
and community.
Hokulani Holt-Padilla, lecturer in Hawaiian
studies and coordinator of this summer's World Hula Conference, for
her role as kumu hula, historian, playwright, co-founder of Punana
Leo O Maui immersion preschool and cultural adviser to Maui Arts
and Cultural Center.
Lee Stein, instructor in human services,
for work as a volunteer for Women Helping Women, Hawai‘i State
representative to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence
and founder of Alternatives to Violence.
Accomplishments and Activities
Manoa Associate Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures Lucy
Lower serves on the executive board of the Association for
Asian Studies.
Kaulana Keala, an assistant extension agent
in family and consumer sciences, is one of 12 project team leaders
participating in a national Prepare for Elder Care program sponsored
by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and American Association of Retired
Persons Foundation.
Manoa Associate Professor of Economics Theresa Greaney is
an associate editor for the journal Japan and the World Economy.
Manoa library fiscal officer John Awakuni is
UH's nominee for the 2005 Governor's Awards for Dinstinguished State
Service. He is also part of the team, with Nora
Goya, Jane Kageura, Audrey
Nishioka and Faith Tanaka, nominated
for the Team Excellence Award of Merit. Read the news
