At a Senate hearing, UH administrators presented the community
college’s supplemental budget request for workforce development
initiatives. They highlighted the crucial role UH community colleges
play in addressing the worker shortage and the numerous workforce
development programs underway. They stressed the urgent need for
financial support from the Legislature in order to continue and
enhance programs.
Hawai‘i is facing a skilled worker shortage. According to
recent data, the aging of Hawai‘i’s current workforce
and the growth in the economy over the past two years have resulted
in approximately 29,000 jobs to be filled annually. In addition,
more than half the jobs to be filled over the next 10 years will
require training beyond high school.

New Early Childhood Education Program at West O‘ahu
A new program in early childhood education at UH West O‘ahu
was established. Community college students can now attain a bachelor’s
degree in early childhood education without losing credits when
moving between the community college and UHWO. The program will
strengthen the educational and career ladder provided by the UH
system for students who seek to obtain the preparation needed by
early childhood teachers to meet increasingly higher standards
in Hawai‘i.
At present, UH System only offers undergraduates the opportunity
to earn an associate’s degree with an emphasis in early childhood
education at Kaua‘i, Honolulu, Maui and Hawai‘i. These
campuses have revised their program requirements in order to align
their curriculum and ensure that graduates from any of the programs
will have a solid foundation to begin their careers in the field
of early education and/or to continue their education in early
childhood.
