Pair Honored

Two researchers from Manoa's School of Ocean and Earth Sciences and
Technology are among the 15 scientists to be honored by the National
Academy of Sciences in 2006.
Interim Dean Klaus Keil will receive the
J. Lawrence Smith Medal and a $25,000 cash prize for his pioneering
work on the mineral content, origin and evolution of meteorites. Keil
joined the SOEST faculty in 1990.

Professor of Geology and Geophysics Steven M. Stanley will
receive the Mary Clark Thompson medal and a $15,000 cash prize for
studies involving bivalve mollusks and large-scale evolution and extinction
patters in relation to global environmental change.
The medals, which are awarded are given every three years, will be
presented during the academy's annual meeting in Washington, D.C.,

Healing Garden Dedicated

Hilo faculty member Kekuhi Kanahele and
Emeritus Professor of Medicine Richard Kekuni Blaisdell were
among the faculty, students and guests who celebrated the Jan. 17 dedication
of a la‘au or healing garden planted with traditional Hawaiian
medicinal plants at the John A. Burns School of Medicine's Kaka‘ako
complex. Kanahele offered a pule ho‘ola composed for the event.
Among Manoa members of the committee that made the garden a reality
were Isabella Abbott, botany; Nanette
Judd, Imi Ho‘ola Post-baccalaureate Program, and Martina
Kamaka, Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence.
Scholarship Honors Professor
He had a reputation as a tough teacher, but the students of Manoa
Emeritus Professor of Civil Engineering Arthur Chiu were
grateful. They established the Dr. Arthur N. L. Chiu Endowed Scholarship
in Civil Engineering in honor of the still active mentor. Read about

Prizzia is a reviewer for the journal American Review
of Public Administration.
Manoa Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning Dolores
Foley has been elected to the board of the nonpartisan National

Miike was elected to a two-year term as third vice president
of the Pacific and Asian Communication Association. Hilo colleague Kay
Daub, assistant professor of nursing, was reappointed co-chair
of the Hawai‘i State Board of Nursing. |
