Sut Jhally Visits UH

• Mon., Feb. 20, Kapi‘olani CC, Ohia Room 108—Class Dismissed explores the ways in which race, gender and sexuality intersect with class. Wrestling with Manhood deals with the enormous popularity of professional wrestling among male youth and its relationship to real-life violence.
• Tues., Feb. 21, Leeward CC, GT 105—Presentation on media literacy featuring clips from Tough Guise and Dreamworlds.
• Thurs., Feb. 23, Manoa, Architecture Auditorium—Tough Guise systematically examines the relationship between pop-cultural imagery and the social construction of masculine identities in the U.S.
• Fri., Feb. 24, Manoa, Architecture Auditorium—Hijacking Catastrophe examines how a radical fringe of the Republican party has used the trauma of the 9/11 terror attacks to advance a pre-existing agenda to radically transform American foreign policy while rolling back civil liberties and social programs at home.

Multiethnic Family Conference

Manoa’s Center on the Family holds the Multiethnic Families: Development, Identity and Wellbeing conference, Feb. 21–23 at Manoa’s East-West Center. This inaugural conference explores the development of theory and conceptual models, family formation and family life-cycles, identity development, multiethnic socialization, risk and protective factors, developmental outcomes, and research methods. Astronomy Center Opening

The ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai‘i on the Big Island opens its doors to the public, Tues., Feb. 21, 1–4 p.m. ‘Imiloa, which means “exploring new knowledge,” will showcase interactive exhibits, planetarium shows, group tours, a museum store, a restaurant and a full schedule of events. Poetry Reading at Hilo

Indo-Fijian poet Mohit Prasad holds a reading on Wed., Feb. 22, 6 p.m. at Hilo’s Campus Center 301. Prasad, director of the Pacific Writing Forum at the University of South Pacific in Suva, Fiji, will read from his books of collected poetry Eyes of the Mask and Eating Mangoes, as well as from of a number of manuscripts being readied for publication. Documentary Screening at Hilo

The documentary The Twelve Disciples of Nelson Mandela will be screened at The Palace Theatre in Hilo on Wed., Feb. 22, 7:30 p.m. Director Thomas Allen Harris will conduct a question and answer session following the film. The film chronicles Harris’ journey of reconciliation with his deceased stepfather B. Pule Leinaeng (Lee). Lee was an African National Congress foot soldier who sacrificed his life for the freedom of his country. (808) 974-7524

 

Gaming Industry Lectures

football playersBob Nicoll, senior director for World Wide Graphics Training for Electronic Arts, discusses the electronic gaming industry, Feb. 23–24 at Kapi‘olani CC’s Kopiko 202. Nicoll will cover the convergence of the gaming and film industries, the relationship between game design lighting and traditional painting and how principles of cinematography relate to game design. Nicoll has worked on games such as Harry Potter, James Bond 007, Madden football, Lord of the Rings and Sims. (808) 735-3879

 

Korean Nationalism Lecture

Chong-ko Choi lectures on Paul K. Ryu (1915-1998): Korean Nationalism and Cosmopolitanism on Thurs., Feb 23, noon at Manoa’s Center for Biographical Research, Henke 325. Choi is a professor of slaw at Seoul National University, visiting scholar at Manoa’s law school and president of the Korean Biographical Society. (808) 956-3774

Hilo holds its Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Service Awards banquet on Fri., Feb. 24, 5:30 p.m. at the Campus Center Dining Room. Indian Dance Concert

Indian dancers in costume dancingLeeward Theatre presents the Nrityagram Dance Ensemble on Sat., Feb 25, 8 p.m. Originating from the first and only dance village in the world, the Indian dance ensemble practices Odissi, one of seven classical Indian dance forms. Their agile, sinuous movements recount the exploits of mythical heroes and gods as they love and wage war. Such is the discipline and mastery of these dancers—there are 28 meaningful movements of the eyes alone—the resulting performance is nothing short of electrifying. (808) 455-0385
