Jingju Master Honored

Madame Shen Xiaomei received UH's honorary
degree of humane letters before the opening performance of this year's
Jingju production, Women Generals of the Yang Family, at Kennedy
Theatre. Shen opened China's traditional national theatre to the
west when she agreed to train Professor of Theatre Eiizabeth
Wichmann-Walczak in 1979. She has since conducted six year-long
residencies for UH students preparing to perform Jingju in English,
thereby contributing to the international reputation of Manoa's Asian
Theatre Program. Read the news

Professor of Geology and Geophysics Brian Popp has
been elected a fellow by the Geochemical Society and European Association
for Geochemistry for major contributions to the field. He heads Manoa's
Isotope Biogeochemistry Laboratories.
Mānoa Assistant Professor of American Studies Robert
Perkinson is one of 17 scholars sharing more than $1 million
in grant support as a 2006 Soros Justice Fellow. Perkinson is writing
a history of American Punishment, focusing on the Texas prison system. Read

Hilo Professor of Communication Ron Gordon presented
a paper on water metaphors in traditional Chinese and American thought
during closing ceremonies of a conference ar Xiamen University in Fujian,
China. Sociologist Thom Curtis presented
two papers at the International Conference on Social Science Research
in Florida. One considered Native Hawaiians' perception of violence
in pursuit of sovereignty, the other examined the lives of U.S. citizens
turning to jihad.
Hilo Associate Professor of Physics Philippe Binder is
one of seven scholars from non–PhD granting institutions to participate
in Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics research programs at the
University of California, Santa Barbara.
