SimBaby Arrives at Manoa
Assistant Professor Francisco
Conde and Instructor Lorrie Wong conduct an infant assessment on the new SimBaby™ teaching
aid.
Manoa’s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene has a new addition
to its state-of-the-art Simulation Laboratory—SimBaby™,
a high-fidelity mannequin with advanced simulation capabilities.
The simulator will help educators test student decision-making
and technical skills in pediatric care without any risk to a real-life
baby.
SimBaby™ interfaces with a laptop computer that is controlled
by the nursing teacher. It provides students with hands-on training
in infant airway-management, pediatric intravenous drug administration
and infant cardiac arrest.

Statewide Nursing Consortium Established
University of Hawai‘i nursing faculty from across the state.
UH nursing faculty systemwide established the Statewide Nursing
Education Consortium, which is dedicated to reinventing the nursing
education offered at Hawai‘i, Kapi‘olani, Kaua‘i,
Maui, Hilo and Manoa.
Currently, UH offers an associate degree in nursing at four community
colleges and a baccalaureate degree at Manoa and Hilo. Nursing
students who graduate from the community colleges and decide to
attain further education normally have to reapply at either of
the upper-division campuses and continue with their studies.
With the proposed curriculum, all students will take standard
courses during their first year and second year. The third year
marks a decision point for students when they will be given the
option to exit with an associate degree, or to complete a bachelor’s
degree with a fourth year of study.
