Peanuts Musical

Windward’s Paliku Theatre presents the delightful musical-comedy You’re a Good Man Charlie Brown, April 7–15. Charlie Brown follows Charles Schultz’s beloved Peanuts gang through a typical day in their lives. Join Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty and the rest for music and smiles for the whole family.

Opening night, Fri., April 7,  will be Loving Linus Night. Anyone who brings a new or used-but-clean blanket will receive a discounted entrance rate. Nature Photography Exhibit

Kaua‘i CC features the photography display Archipelago: Portraits of Life in the World’s Most Remote Island Sanctuary through April 15 at the Library. The exhibit documents the flora and fauna of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, one of the most extensive reef ecosystems remaining on earth. These photos by Susan Middleton and David Liittschwager were recently published in a book by the National Geographic Society.

String Quartet Concert

Brentano String Quartet

The Brentano String Quartet with Mark Votapek on cello performs on Tues., April 4, 7:30 p.m. at Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium. Since its inception in 1992, the Brentano String Quartet has been singled out for its technical brilliance, musical insight and stylistic elegance. Art Lecture

Aboriginal artist Christine Christophersen gives a public lecture on Tues., April 4, 7:30 p.m. at Manoa’s Art auditorium. Christophersen, born in Australia, is a member of the Murran Clan, Northwest Arnhem Land, of the Iwatja language group. Andrew Lam Spotlight

Hawai‘i Bibliovision features Andrew Lam on Tues., April 4, 8 p.m. on Olelo channel 55. Lam was one of the featured speakers at last November’s conference, Thirty Years After: the Literature and Film of the Vietnam War. Lam is a Vietnamese American short story writer, essayist and journalist. MacMillan Reading

Seven Orchids bookcover Professor Ian MacMillan reads from his newest novel, The Seven Orchids, and The Braid on Wed., April 5, 7:30 p.m. at Manoa’s HIG auditorium. The Seven Orchids tells the tale of Danielle Baker and her struggle with alcohol and of a canoe buried beneath seven orchids. The Braid follows the story of a young man struggling with alcoholism and the promise he made to his dying mother, to bury her braid in Hawai‘i, the place of their birth. (808) 956-7619

Yarrow Cheney lectures on Curious George: Taking the Monkey from Page to Screen on Wed., April 5, 6:30 p.m. at Kapi‘olani’s Ohia 118. Cheney, production designer for Universal and Imagine Entertainment's Curious George, will discuss the process of adapting H.A. Rey's design vocabulary and color palette of the beloved children's books to the big screen through the use of lighting in three dimensional space. (808) 734-9382

• April 6, 9 —The Tiger’s Apprentice and Between Two Worlds: The Hmong Shaman in America. In The Tiger’s Apprentice, Trinh Nguyen travels to Vietnam to learn more about her great-uncle’s traditional medical practices. Between Two Worlds documents the Hmong refugees transplanted from northern Laos to cities in the U.S.
• April 13, 16—Powerful Medicine and Amchis: The Forgotten Healers of the Himalayas. Powerful Medicine explores the curative powers of plants and the knowledge of traditional healers. Amchis looks at traditional Tibetan medicine men in Zanskar.
• April 20, 23—Shaman of the Andes and Kau Faito‘o: Traditional Healers of Tonga. Shaman explores the world of the Quechua Indian shaman. Kau Faito‘o looks at Tongan social practices that enabled the survival of traditional healing.
• April 27, 30—Selling Sickness and A Touch of Magic: Treating the Person Inside the Patient. Selling Sickness deals with drug manufacturers and their aggressive marketing campaigns. A Touch of Magic looks at the merits of alternative medicine and holistic care.

International Celebration

Ballet at Leeward

Fugate/Bahiri Ballet NY performs on Sat., April 8, 8 p.m. at Leeward Theatre. Judith Fugate and husband Medhi Bahiri created Ballet NY with the goal of bringing fun back to ballet. Mechanics and technique are great, but it is the artistry and personality of the dancers that make ballet exciting. These superb dancers explode across the stage with athleticism, energy and charisma. (808) 455-0385

 

Morales Fiction Lecture

Associate Professor Rodney Morales speaks on Fiction as Alternative History on Sat., April 8, 10:30 a.m. at Manoa’s Hamilton Library Yap Conference Room A153. Morales will speak on his latest novel When the Shark Bites and other sources as alternative history.
