CTAHR to Present Awards
Five people will be honored during Manoa's annual College of Tropical
Agriculture and Human Resources awards banquet May 4 at Hilton Hawaiian
Village’s Coral Ballroom. Monday, April 24 is the registration
deadline. See the website.
Charles Nelson, a supervisor in agricultural
equipment development, will receive the Dean's Award for Outstanding
Civil Service. Karl Yanagihara, research
support staff member, will receive the Dean's Award for Outstanding
Service by an Administrative, Professional or Technical Employee. Animal
Scientist Charles Weems will receive the
Dean's Award for Excellence in Research.
Entomologist Po-Yung Lai, a former assistant
dean for cooperative extension in Manoa's College of Tropical Agriculture
and Human Resources now working at National Pingtung University of
Science and Technology in Taiwan, will receive the college's 2006 Outstanding
Alumnus award. The Ka Lei Hano Heritage award goes to Big Island rancher
Herbert "Monty" Richards, who has served on the CTAHR Board
of Advisors.
Honors and Achievements
Six solar astronomers from Manoa observed the March 29 total solar
eclipse from the Sahara desert in Libya. Institute for Astronomy's Jeff
Kuhn describes the experience in the Star-Bulletin.
Kapi‘olani Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Asian Studies Carl
Hefner will be installed in a second term as president of
the East-West Center Alumni Association-Hawai‘i Chapter during
a dinner April 30 at the Willows restaurant in Honolulu. Under Hefner's
leadership, the chapter was named Outstanding Chapter for its support
of the EWC mission and students.
Hilo Associate Professor of Art Michael Marshall juried
the All Hawai‘i Juried Art Exhibition, which continues through
April 28 at the East Hawai‘i Cultural Center.
West O‘ahu Professor of Public Administration Ross
Prizzia is a referee and reviewer for the International
Review of Administrative Sciences.
Works first published in Manoa Journal, which is edited by
Professor of English Frank Stewart, have
received national attention. Alex Hinton's essay "The Perpetrator,
the Victim and the Witness" appears in The Best American Essays
2005 anthology. "City Out of Breath," by Ken Chen, will
appear in the 2006 edition. Lysley Tenorio's short story "The
Brothers" will be included in The Pushcart Prize: Best of
the Small Presses 2006 anthology.
Poet and Manoa Professor of American Studies Joseph
Stanton presented a free reading, Poetry, Painting and Baseball,
at the Ala Moana Barnes & Noble April 21 to celebrate National
Poetry Month. He has published books as diverse as poems on art and
baseball, children's literature and suburban wildlife.
Manoa Professor of Law John Barkai presented
mediation and negotiation workshops recently for the Hawai‘i
Civil Rights Commission and state Department of Health. Colleague Mark
Levin led the law school's participation in development of the
state's second five-year strategic plan for tobacco prevention and
control.
Manoa Assistant Professor of Oceanography Margaret
McManus is a 2006 Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow. She will
receive intensive training in communicating science effectively to
non-scientists. |
