University Librarian Diane Perushk and
China specialist Librarian K. T. Yao recently
welcomed a delegation from the National Library of China headed
by Director Zhan Furui to the Manoa campus.
The visitors announced that Hamilton Library will be one of 100
libraries worldwide that will receive 100 books a year as participants
in the Chinese library's Windows on China Program. The visit also
marked continued commitment to a six-year-old staff exchange program
between the two libraries. Read the news

Karl Elected to National Academy of Sciences

David M. Karl from Manoa’s School
of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology was elected to the National
Academy of Sciences.
"Dr. Karl's research on microorganisms in the ocean has vastly
increased the world's realization of just how vital the seas are
to the health of our planet," says SOEST Interim Dean Klaus
Keil.
Other honors Karl received in recent years include the Henry
Bryant Bigelow Award in Oceanography, the Chancellor’s Distinguished
Lecturer of Louisiana State University and the David Packard Medal. Read

Korean Filmmakers Lab Developed
To encourage emerging Korean American filmmakers to bring their
stories to the screen, Manoa’s Academy for Creative Media
and the Korean Film Council launched the inaugural KOFIC Filmmakers
Development Lab. The lab will be held in Hawai‘i in early
September.
Selected participants will be paired with industry mentors from
both Korea and the United States, in an intensive week-long retreat.
The goal of the lab is to enable participants to develop a high
quality script that could be presented to financiers and production
companies in both countries. Read
