UH Laboratory School Fire

A classroom and office building at the UH
Laboratory School was destroyed by fire on June 13. Summer session
began that week, but the classes scheduled to meet
in the building ended at noon and no students were endangered.
Several faculty members were displaced in the office section of
the facility.
An inventory of losses is now underway as investigative work continues.
Lab School officials and Manoa administrators have begun
planning for short-term recovery as well as longer range
options.

Four faculty members were recipients of the Frances Davis Award
for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching. In memory of the late
Frances Davis who taught mathematics at Leeward CC and UH Manoa
for 19 years, the award recognizes UH faculty members who demonstrate
outstanding dedication and excellence as teachers of undergraduate
students.
This year’s honorees
- Amy Donahue, a doctoral candidate in philosophy and teaching
assistant at Manoa
- Grace Ihara, former associate professor in speech at Honolulu
- Kendall Inada, insturctor of classics at Manoa
- Lorelle Solanzo-Peros, instructor of hospitality and tourism
at Maui
