Physicist Receives U.S. DOE Grant

Gary Varner

Manoa physicist Gary Varner received one of nine U.S. Department of Energy grants to investigate new or improved detector technologies for dark matter searches, particle identification and other physics research.

A 1999 alumnus of Manoa's doctoral physics program, Varner was a director of the Instrumentation Development Laboratory before being appointed assistant professor in 2005.

He hopes to apply detector readout technology that he used in Antarctica experiments to identification of b quarks produced in particle accelerators. Read the news release.

 

Windward Newsletter Honored

Windward Information, Events and Publications Coordinator Susan Lee accepted the prestigious Paragon award from the National Council for Marketing and Public Relations for the campus's Malamalama o Ko‘olau newsletter she oversees.

The full-color tabloid publication was designed by Graphic Artist Bonnie Beatson. Professor of English Libby Young assists with editing and proofing.

 

Honors and Achievements

Ruth Mabanglo

Manoa Professor Ruth Mabanglo received a Tanging Parangal award for her literary work from Manila Mayor Jose Atienza in June. She previously received Palanca Awards (the Philippine Pulitzer) for 6 plays, 26 poems and a short story. Mabanglo is coordinator of the Filipino and Philippine Literature Program.

Kapi‘olani Assistant Professor of Social Sciences Carl Hefner will present a paper on interpreting Myanmar and its traditional culture at the 2006 Burma Studies Conference in Singapore this month.

Harald Barkoff

Hilo Assistant Professor of Health and Physical Education Harald Barkoff presents papers at two conferences this month—research in sports psychology at the the International Congress of Applied Psychology in Greece and health behavior at the American Psychological Association's convention in New Orleans.

Sea Grant College Program Associate Director Mary Donohue discussed efforts to remove marine debris in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands as a panelist for Capitol Hill Ocean Week in Washignton, D.C, in June.
