Small Island Sustainability Conference

Islands conference logoMaui is hosting the International Small Islands Studies Association's 2006 conference—Islands of the World IX, July 31–Aug. 2. Scholars and experts who study small island issues and problems will make presentations, lead discussions and interact with international colleagues.

The general theme of the conference is Sustainable Islands—Sustainable Strategies with emphasis on the interconnected topics of poʻokela (economy), malama ʻaina (ecology), and hoʻohanohano (social equity and heritage). UH speakers include Ivo Martinac, Ken Kaneshiro and Davianna McGregor. (808) 984-3670

Dodie Warren

Kapiʻolani features art works from the instructors of the Center Your Creativity summer classes at the Koa Gallery through Aug. 4. This year’s classes worked in ceramics, painting, assemblage and collage, encaustic painting, paper clay and stained glass. Kapiʻolani’s Ka‘Ikena dining room features prints and drawings by Dodie Warren through Aug. 21. Warren is the 2006 Koa Award winner for her lifetime of work in art and teaching. (808) 734-9375

 

Extraterrestrial Life Lecture

Searching for Life posterSeth Shostak and Chris McKay present the panel discussion Searching for Life in the Universe on Fri., July 28, 7:30 p.m. at Manoa’s Art Auditorium. The discussion focuses on the possibility of extraterrestrial life and how scientists look for simple life in the solar system and listen for intelligent life around other stars. (808) 956-6107

 

Ceramics Open House

The East-West Ceramics Collaboration Open House takes place on Sun., July 29, 10 a.m. at the Manoa Art Building Ceramics Courtyard. The open house is an opportunity to meet the artists and discuss their works in progress. The East-West Ceramics Collaboration focuses on intercultural exchange in the ceramic arts. It involves a group of invited, professional artists representing the Eastern and Western hemispheres. (808) 956-5264
