Lab School Fundraiser The UH Lab School holds a back-to-school fundraising concert on Sat., Aug. 19, 6–10 p.m. at the Manoa’s Andrews Amphitheatre. The Holomua (Moving Ahead) Benefit Concert: A Time for Recovery features some of Hawai‘i’s top musicians including HAPA, Na Leo, The Brothers Cazimero and many others. All proceeds from the concert will be used to repair damages caused by the June fire including the school’s performing arts department, the P.E. and weight training room, the UHS Jr. ‘Bows athletic department and the athletic trainer’s office. More Events New Anti-Depressant LectureProfessor Joachim Spiess lectures on Opportunities to Commercialize UH R&D: Cortagine, A Novel Type of Anti-Depressive on Fri., Aug. 11, 7:30 a.m. Spiess, a world-renowned molecular and systems neuroscientist, characterized the corticotropin-releasing (CRH) hormone responsible for inducing stress response. Teaching Assistant TrainingThe Manoa Center for Teaching Excellence presents the Teaching Assistants Training Program, Aug. 15–16 at Kuykendall 106. Topics include an undergraduate student panel on teaching and learning, rights and responsibilities of TAs, assessment of student work, professional and ethical issues, teaching in a multicultural environment, facilitating effective discussions, encouraging active learning among students, how to respond effectively to student writing, understanding learning styles, fostering honest and productive relationships and more.
