Strong Bond Ratings for Health and Wellness Center

UH has earned strong ratings by three national financial rating agencies for the issuance of $150-million in series 2002A revenue bonds to finance construction of the medical school’s health and wellness center at Kaka‘ako.

"I welcome this great news for the university and for the Health and Wellness Center project," said Wick Sloane, chief financial officer. Student Information Network Vendor Selected

The university has chosen SCT to implement a system-wide student information network. SCT Banner is scheduled to be operational, including online registration, at all the community college campuses in time for the fall 2002 semester

With Banner, the university’s nearly 45,000 students will be able to move across the various campuses but still be treated as individual students within one system, said Alan Yang, UH dean of student services. Currently, the university has four separate computer systems controlling student information, and transferring information between campuses is not an automatic process. With Banner, UH campuses will share one database.

"As a company, SCT has moved very far toward not just having a student information system that is about registration, but about how you use student information to empower the students," said John Morton, director of the Student Information System project. More information

11 New Satellites of Jupiter Discovered

starsUH astronomers announced the discovery of 11 new satellites of Jupiter. These new satellites, when added to the 11 discovered the previous year by the Hawai‘i team, bring the total of known Jupiter satellites to 39, more than any other planet.

A team led by Scott S. Sheppard and David Jewitt from the Institute for Astronomy and Jan Kleyna of Cambridge University discovered the new satellites. They used the Canada-France-Hawai‘i (3.6 meter) telescope with one of the largest digital imaging cameras in the world to obtain sensitive images of a wide area around Jupiter. The satellites were formally announced by the International Astronomical Union on Circular No. 7900 on May 16, 2002. More information

New MA and BS Degrees at Hilo

The Board of Regents approved the establishment of a master of arts degree in counseling psychology and changed the status of the bachelor of science degree in biology at UH Hilo.

"The overall mission of the proposed master of arts program in counseling psychology is to offer student-centered, cross-cultural graduate training in counseling psychology," said Chancellor Rose Tseng. The MA program begins fall 2003.

The status for the bachelor of science degree in biology, which offers advanced coursework in chemistry, physics and mathematics, was changed from provisional to established. The biology department currently offers a bachelor of arts degree with a track in cell and molecular biology (CMB) and ecology, evolutionary biology and conservation biology (EECB).
