Japanese Midget Sub Discovery
Makes Media Splash
Researchers
aboard the R/V Kaimikai-o-Kanaloa from the Hawaii Undersea
Research Laboratory (HURL) found the mini-sub involved in military actions that
lead up to the war of the Pacific between the Americans and the Japanese. The
midget sub was discovered 3 to 4 miles off Pearl Harbor. The destroyer USS Ward
sank the sub at approximately 6 a.m. on December 7, 19412 hours prior
to the aerial attack on Pearl Harbor. John Wiltshire,
associate director of HURL, called the discovery "probably the most significant
archaeological find in the Pacific."
For more information about the discovery, including video of the first sighting
of the midget sub, go to the projects
Web site or read the press
release. The discovery was also featured in the Honolulu
Advertiser, Star
Bulletin, The
Washington Post, ABC
News, The
New York Times and CNN.
