Exhibit Draws State’s First Senior Senator


Sen. Hiram and Ellyn Fong inspect memorabilia from his UH days and political career with Bronwen Solyom, librarian and development officer. It took three flatbed trucks to transfer the thousand boxes of materials that Fong donated to the UH archives. Others viewing the Hamilton Library exhibit included Fong’s son, Hiram Jr. and his secretary, Hunny Yee, and biographer, Michaelyn Chou. Bob Kamins, chief of staff to Fong’s fellow senator, the late Oren Long, was also on hand, as was the libary's new congressional archivist, Jan Zastrow.


Jim Mak’s Work in Economics Highlighted


Veteran UH economist James Mak was featured in the Star Bulletin’s “First Sunday” conversation Sept. 1. Mak, a professor of economics at Manoa, has taught and wrtten about Hawai‘i’s economy for three decades. For more, read the article.


Recent Accomplishments

Frank Stewart, Manoa poet, editor and professor of English, represented the United States at the recent Asia-Pacific
Conference Workshop on Indigenous and Contemporary Poetry in Manila. For more, see the release.

Books by Honolulu CC authors Christopher McKinney, Rick Ziegler and Patrick Patterson are among the Hawai‘i Book Publishers Association’s five nominatees for excellence in Hawaiian literature. McKinney, a language arts instructor, wrote The Queen of Tears. Historians Ziegler and Patterson co-authored Red Sun.

An untitled work by Michael Marshall, Hilo associate professor of art, has been included in the State Foundation on Culture and the Arts inaugural exhibition at the Hawai‘i State Museum. The work is part of the Art in Public Places Collection.


In Memory: Professor Thomas H. Ige

Retired economics professor and Manoa administrator Thomas Ige died Aug. 22 in Honolulu. Born in Waipahu, he joined the university as an associate professor in 1953. He served as veterans advisor, acting dean of summer session, director of Asian studies, chair of economics, acting assistant dean of the College of General Studies and acting director of the Economic Research Center before retiring in 1980. Private services were held. Memorial gifts may be made to the Kin Chojin Kai Okinawan Club, c/o Nancy Gaige, 1743 Kilohi St., Honolulu, HI 96819.
