Need to print out the PDF of a recent journal article? Interested in searching the literature of a particular topic? Browse the table of contents of your favorite journals? Set up an alert system to run your searches at designated intervals and receive e-mail alerts with direct links to the new search results?

These are some of the services available from ScienceDirect, a Web-based resource licensed by the University of Hawai‘i Library for all faculty and students of the UH system. Using ScienceDirect you can access more than 1,500 peer reviewed academic journals, search more than 30 million abstracts, link out to articles from more than 90 other publishers and have desktop access to more than 3 million full-text articles.

ScienceDirect, somewhat of a misnomer, is owned by the Dutch publisher Reed Elsevier. While Elsevier is known for its science journals, ScienceDirect includes journals in the following 22 subject categories: agricultural and biological sciences; arts and humanities; business, management, and accounting; chemical engineering; chemistry; civil engineering; computer science; decision sciences; economics, econometrics and finance; energy and power; engineering and technology; environmental science; fundamental life sciences; materials science; mathematics; medicine; neuroscience; pharmacology, toxicology and pharmaceutics; physics and astronomy; psychology; and social science.

Until the end of February 2003, UH system libraries have trial access to Elsevier’s 1,500 journals. After the trial, access to full-text journals will be limited to only the journals subscribed to by UH libraries (approximately 380 titles). Free access will continue for abstracts and table of contents. For full-text articles, search now until the end of February 2003. ScienceDirect access is restricted to UH IP addresses.

If you are on campus and searching from a computer connected to the network, you may go directly to ScienceDirect and you will be automatically recognized as a licensed user. To access ScienceDirect from off-campus and/or you are dialing in through a non-UH Internet provider, try one of the following:
The library homepage of your respective campus should have a link to ScienceDirect
The UH Manoa Library homepage
The UH Manoa Library Science and Technology Reference homepage

Click on the link for Remote Access (e.g., Non UH IP Addresses) which will redirect you to a proxy server. You will be verified by entering your UH I.D./Library card bar code number and last name. Once verified, you will be connected to ScienceDirect.
